What Doomsday? We are still alive

What Doomsday? We are still alive

According to an interpretation of the Mayan Calendar, there were rumours that the world would end today. Here’s an overview of the whole Doomsday drama:
WHY THE HOOPLA?

The 5,000-year cyclical Mayan calendar that began around 3114 BC will come to a close on December 21, sparking fears that the world is due to end that day.
Another theory suggested a galactic alignment which would create chaos on earth due to the gravitational effect.
    Another theory involved

a ‘polar shift’, which means a reversal of the north and south magnetic poles.
IN REALITY

NASA scientists have concluded that 21st December will be nothing more than a normal December solstice. There is simply no scientific evidence to support any claims of an apocalypse on Earth on December 21, 2012. Moreover, scientists say no planetary alignment is likely to occur in the next few decades and the ‘polar shift’ theory is totally impossible.
Experts say the end of the Mayan calendar does not imply the end of the world, only the end of the Mayan long-count period and a new beginning like the Gregorian calendar.
IT’S A MONEYSPINNER

Quick-thinking pubs are kick-starting an early fes
tive season by organising grand theme parties today. As if to fulfill the last wish of every partygoer, they are offering free-flowing liquor, techno music and food.
The doomsday phenomenon came as a boon for astrologers as they are doing brisk business, thanks to worried believers in the theory. With astrologers and numerologists reporting a nearly 20% jump in business in the past few weeks owing to an increasing number of people asking them about what is in store for them on December 21.
    Meanwhile, the curious

and faint-hearted are checking out emergency kits, portable toilets, windpowered battery chargers and even an inflatable Noah’s Ark on a certain website. Should they wish to transport their pets to heaven, there is freezedried pet food, artificial grass, UV protection eyewear and a superhero costume to go with it.
WORLD MEDITATES TODAY Millions are looking at the end of the Mayan calendar at 11.11 am (GMT) as a new beginning. More than 21 million people across the globe have pledged to meditate for this cause between 5 and 6 pm (Indian Standard Time). In another initiative started in the US — the One Billion Oms Meditation effort, people to chant Om for three minutes at 12 noon tomorrow.

I am voicing the feelings of creatures that cannot express themselves

I am voicing the feelings of creatures that cannot express themselves

Artist Mrityunjay Mondal is all set to fight for the environment

When artist Mrityunjay Mondal visited his village a few years back, he saw that all open spaces had been removed to make way for new concrete constructions. All the large tress had been chopped off mercilessly and nature had been compromised to meet the
needs of humans. This stirred something in the artist’s heart. “I wanted the society to wake up to the feelings of the animals, birds and other creatures and decided to do this show,” he says.
When an artist wants to talk
about environment, he does it subtly through the only form of expression known to him — art. Bright colours, unusual forms and concepts that are out of the box are used. Mondal’s latest collection, Journey, he says, is all about the life-cycle of living beings. “Man is cutting trees to make space for his home and buildings. But he does not re-plant these trees and hence there is an imbalance in the eco-system. The animals are losing their natural space. In my work, I am voicing the feelings and opinions of creatures that cannot express themselves.”
For Mondal, man is the creature who wants to control everything and man’s drive for urbanisation is slowly destroying other creatures. The artist feels for these animals, birds and fish and he wants to express how these mute creatures feel, through his art. In his works, we can see a lot of these creatures with human heads. He explains, “These creatures have emotions and would like to be happy with their space and surroundings. So, I
have used half animal and half human figures as a metaphor to show that even these creatures would like to have their own space, family and surroundings and they don’t mind coexisting with humans.”
In one of his paintings, Mondal has shown a boat which depicts the Noah’s Ark. He says, “Humans as well as other creatures went aboard the ark, as all were needed for earth’s existence. But today, we abuse this right of theirs.”
The artist has used bright colours to portray positivity. He says, “I have used bright colours to represent the beautiful thoughts of these lovely creatures. Since these creatures cannot speak for themselves, I have shown them in bright and warm colours to appeal to the society to give these lovely creatures the space they need.” A heart-warming journey through Mrityunjay Mondal’s eye.

Mrityunjay Mondal’s works can be viewed at India Fine Art, Tardeo, till December 21.

Malaysian Feng Shui expert dismisses Mayan calendar’s apocalyptic myth

Malaysian Feng Shui expert dismisses Mayan calendar’s apocalyptic myth

Feng shui master and founder of the Malaysian Institute of Geomancy Sciences ,Professor Master David Koh, said that people should not put their money on the world ending on December 21, as some have misinterpreted the ancient Mayan calendar. “When the Mayans printed the calendar, December 21, 2012 was the end of one calendar cycle,” he said, adding, “So surely a new cycle will have to begin.” He also gave an assurance that all the studies conducted by leading scientific authorities had shown no indication that the world would undergo any massive changes overnight.
“We don’t see natural catastrophes that will severely wipe out the entire human population in the next few years,” Koh said.
“Even if there is a massive volcanic eruption, or even a nuclear war, it is not doomsday,” he added.

Koh dismissed the December 21 myth as a hoax made popular by the Hollywood film 2012, which revolved around the apocalyptic belief.
It was also reported that Pope Benedict XVI had rubbished claims that the world would end next week. Although the world was unlikely to end, a Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia climatologist, Prof Datuk Dr Shaharuddin Ahmad, said signs were already there that the world was changing for the worse. “It doesn’t have to be December 21, but there are already so many signs of doomsday,” he said.
“Climate change is happening rapidly and the world is getting hotter and hotter,” he pointed out.
“If nothing is done to stop this, the weather will become too hot for crops, water resources will dry up and there will be droughts everywhere,” he added.

According to a new survey titled ‘Superstitions@Workplace,’ the overall faith in personal belief or superstition is quite high (62 per cent) among employees in India

We may like to believe that we are thinking, rational individuals. However, a recent survey reveals otherwise. The Indian corporate workforce still relies on superstitious beliefs to give them that boost of luck. Practices like vaastu shastra, feng shui and other lucky charms are very popular at the workplace, says a survey. According to a staffing company that conducted the survey titled Superstitions@Workplace, the overall faith in personal belief or superstition is quite high (62%) among employees in India and more than half of the respondents (51%) follow superstition at their workplace.
While vaastu shastra and feng shui are the most common practices followed at the workplace, personal favourites are lucky charms like the laughing Buddha, the musical fountain, frog, tortoise and even the simple bamboo shoot stand that find a place at workstations across the country. The study further said that management in India is generally adaptive to various superstitious beliefs of employees and does not restrict them from practicing it at work as long as it does not negatively affect productivity.
Nearly half of the respondents (48%) felt that practising superstition at workplace
has had a positive effect and modern organisations impose fewer restrictions on such practices. Furthermore, senior management are of the opinion that superstitious beliefs and practices are common at workplaces, they do not have any significant influence on people and the corporate culture. Meanwhile, a higher percentage of female employees (80%) are happy with superstitious practices as compared to males (68%). Among the cities, it was observed that the level of superstition seems to comparatively less followed in Ahmedabad and Pune whereas it was higher in Bangalore and New Delhi. The survey covered 800 companies across the top eight cities — New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, B a n g a l o re, Hyderabad, Pune and Ahmedabad.

ECO WATCH In Mexico City, a new green revolution

ECO WATCH

In Mexico City, a new green revolution

Agreen revolution is sweeping across the car and concrete jungle of Mexico City, an infamously smoggy capital that was once dubbed ‘Makesicko City’ by novelist Carlos Fuentes. Residents are growing vegetables on rooftops, planting trees where buildings once stood, hopping on bicycles and riding in electric taxis, defying the urban landscape in this metropolis of 20 million people and four million cars. “This is
our vote for the environment,” said Elias Cattan, a 33-year-old architect pointing to the lettuce, onions and chillies growing in a planting table and inside used tires on the balcony of his rooftop office. “It’s a window to the future and it is very important that we reconnect with the earth,” he said.
How it started

Twenty years ago, the United
Nations declared the Mexican capital the world’s most polluted city. Fuentes envisioned black acid rain in his novel Christopher Unborn, but in real life, the air was so nasty that birds dropped dead in this megalopolis 2,240 meters (7,350 feet) above sea level. While Mexico City still has high levels of pollutants, it has dropped off the top 10 blacklist, thanks to traffic restrictions and the closure of factories, but also because other cities have become grimier.
The left-wing city government has carried out a “green plan” since 2007 to clean up the capital, but many citizens have also taken it upon themselves to change their habits.
Five lakh plants have been placed across the city. The government has expanded a popular bicycle loan programme, opened a new subway line and launched an ‘eco’ bus that runs on natural gas.

Citizen’s co-operation Many go to Chapultepec Park on the first Sunday of every month to trade their recyclables — empty bottles, paper, cardboard — for locally-grown produce such as tomatoes, corn and nopal (an edible cactus) in a city programme.
A corporate-funded citizen initiative has installed huge ‘vertical gardens’ to spruce up the city and clean the air. The city and private groups offer advice to those who want to learn how to plant in a building. “It’s easy, fun and cheap,” said Liliana Balcazar, deputy director of the city’s environmental education centres that show people urban gardening tricks. “You can do it anywhere that gets at least five to six hours of sun per day.”
“It’s like being in the countryside inside the city,” Balcazar said, noting that it is also a great source of healthy, homegrown produce for a population facing obesity problem.

Changing skyline of Nashik - Shelter 2012

Changing skyline of Nashik - Shelter 2012

Though the real estate industry is facing recession in the country and property prices have reverted to some extent in some cities, but Nashik city is an exception to this. The real estate growth in Nashik is slow but steady

The real estate market in the city has gradually started picking up since Dussehra and around 1,000 flats have been either sold or booked across all locations in the city, according to reliable sources.
According to experts, the real estate sector in Nashik city is expected to grow at the rate of 25 per cent a year for the next four years.
President of Nashik unit of the Confederation of Real Estate Developers'Association of India (CREDAI) Kiran Chavan, says, "The real estate sector is facing a slowdown for the past few months and real estate prices have reverted in Mumbi and Pune. But the situation in Nashik is not like those of Mumbai and Pune. The realty rates in Nashik have not reverted and they are constant. In Nashik, there was no investment from the investors' class and that's why there was no artificial rise in the real estate prices."
Chavan further says, "Presently, there is no land available in the city and customers are seen preferring flats at large. Out of total residential properties sold in the city, flats contribute 90 per cent, while row houses and bungalows share 5 per cent each."
The land prices in Nashik have increased by three to 20 times in different parts of the city in the past six-seven
years. The land prices, which were in the range of Rs. 1,100 to 15,000 per yard (nine square feet) in different parts of the city in the past six-seven years, have increased today in the range of Rs. 7,000 to 35,000 per yard.
"For the past many years, Shelter Property Exhibition has been showcasing the growth of Nashik. This property exhibition has truly become a mirror of Nashik's development. Visitors at the exhibition are sure to tell all their friends, relatives about what Nashik has in store when it comes to property. Visitors from Mumbai too will be convinced to own a property in Nashik as it takes just over two hours to reach Nashik from Mumbai while traveling from one place to another in Mumbai also consumes the same amount of time. The icing on the cake is that homes in Nashik are affordable, which is not the case in the financial capital." Says Director of Suyojit Infrastructure, Anant Rajegaonkar
Jayesh Thakker, convenor of Shelter Exhibition says, "Nashik is a great city to live-in for various aspects. Apart from the great climate, education and employment opportunities, medical facilities and recreational facilities among other things, the internal road connectivity is great. The icing on the cake is that Nashik has homes for all the economical sections of the society, which would be exhibited at the Shelter property exhibition.”

The bigger picture of Nashik

The bigger picture of Nashik

Nashik is growing, but the people here want the growth in a planned manner and the one that will suit the needs and fulfill the dreams of the generation next of the city

Nashik, in all the likelihood, soon will be known as the best place to live. Reasons for it too are aplenty. While the serene environs and vicinity to Mumbai and Pune are its main forte, the urge of Nashikites to make their city numero uno in all the aspects is clearly felt, which was seen in the recently held Nashik Vision programme organized by the Confederation of Real Estate Developers' Association of India (CREDAI), Nashik.
An impressed MP, Sameer Bhujbal reiterated, "Nashik is growing and that is evident. But the concern of all, is that this growth need not be in a haphazard way. Today our city has a good number of industries, top class educational facilities, hotels, hospitals, recreational facilities and every other thing for a decent living. While new developments will continue to happen in and around the city, people should come together every often to express their views about them and at the same time also stand up against those who are acting against the progress to serve their personal gains."

Attending to the views of people from different sectors at the programme, District Guardian Minister Chhagan Bhujbal clarified that pleasant weather, fresh air, vegetables in abundance and unpolluted environs used to be the soul of Nashik, which was still there to a larger extent despite the overall growth. He, however, added that in a bid to preserve the same environs in the future, it was necessary that manufacturing units were set up on the outskirts of the city or at the tehsil places that were already connected with good four-lane
roads.
Taking into account that industrial growth in Nashik is necessary, the process of acquiring 3,500 hectares around the district is underway, and another 5,000 hectares has been notified for the same. If factories are taken at tehsil places where agricultural activity is lesser due to water shortage, it will not only see development of such dry belts but also a balanced growth of the overall district. Nashik, meanwhile, can remain as a residential hub and the industries that are coming should be of the kind of IT, medical and education that would not hamper the ecological balance of the city, added Bhujbal.
He also added to facilitate the growth of the rural areas, most of the tehsil places were well connected by good quality roads.
President of Nashik Industries and Manufacturers' Association, Dhananjay Bele said, that after a long time, the district had got a good leadership, following which dreams of many Nashikites have been realised. But citizens of Nashikites want something more than this and create a city for the future generation. NIMA has come out with a slogan Chala Talukyakade (come to the teshil places) for industries to ensure more and more
industries at set-up at Sinnar, Dindori, Gonde Vadi Warhe, there and spruce up the infrastructure there.
According to educationist Ratan Luth, now that the city has grown, emphasis should be laid on earning more generation which is possible through sprucing up the tourism industry. The effort should be on attracting more people
towards Nashik, for education, tourism, residential and other purposes. If the roads are good and the transportation facility is at its best, people can opt for affordable homes that are further from the city.
Dr Aniruddha Dharmadhikari of Saibaba Heart Institute said that Guardian Minister Chhagan Bhujbal has informed that he has spoken to state health minister Suresh Shetty, who has promised to personally look into providing all medical facilities under one roof in Nashik city.
"While Nashik continues to witness steady growth in all the sectors and tourism has also increased with thousands coming here for pilgrimage, wine tourism and other business tours, once the required medical facilities are made available in Nashik, medical tourism will also flourish here," added Dharmadhikari.
"The real estate growth in Nashik is slow, but steady. The property rates have increased a lot, but they are less as compared to rates of properties in Mumbai and Pune. Today, people from Mumbai, Pune and other cities are preferring Nashik as their second home after retirement. Abundant water, good climate, proximity to Mumbai and Pune cities are the plus points of Nashik. Hence, there is no impact of slowdown in realty
sector in Nashik." Says Sunil Bhaybhang, former president of CREDAI Nashik. Earlier, buildings upto 24-metres heights were permitted in Nashik. These could accommodate upto seven storeys. In 2010, norms were changed and the maximum height permissible was increased to 40-metre. With the increase in height, buildings can now accommodate upto 12 floors, which means stilt parking and 12 floors.
Nashik, no doubt, has all the ingredients of a great city and the people here are only poised to take it to greater heights in the future.
The regular exhibitions, on property, industry, agriculture do attract a large number of people from all across the state and the country.
Political leaders and other prominent people, meanwhile, think on taking Nashik to newer heights during such occasions. The upcoming property exhibition Shelter Nashik 2012 is one such event.

A POSITIVE VIBE

Customisation and personal touches are the new trends in the interior decoration field

Designing a home is one of the many things a family can get together and do. Through this they can spend the necessary quality time with each other. Shibani Jain - Art and Craft design consultant and founder believes that people decorate their homes to make it comfortable and pleasing according to their lifestyle choices. She adds, “We create a home that suitably meets all our needs and activities while making it aesthetic enough for ourselves, our family and our friends. The home reflects our personality, exposure, beliefs and status.”
As a home is where people spend most of their time in, it should not only be spic and span but also give out a vibrant and positive feeling. Shirish Jhawar, C.E.O - India, Royal Selangor, says, “The interiors should be pleasing to the eyes as well as comfortable and content to give that homely feeling. A home reflects a person and as such when one decorates his home it reflects his values, beliefs and thoughts in a particular way.”
Apart from the comfort and personality aspect, functionality also plays a vital role. Nivedita S.M: Executive Director, Regency Retail - Exclusive Franchise for FRETTE in India, believes that designing a home is not just about the looks of the building's interior but it also plays a key role in its functionality as even the largest home can lack space due to poor interior design, while a tiny apartment can be transformed into a cosy residence with enough space for just about everything.
Speaking about the new trends in interiors, Jain says, “Customisable folk art and craft skills are now available. One can decorate their walls, temples, partitions and art furniture with the help of highly skilled artists and producers.”
Luxury décor is another option for accessories
in the rooms. Jhawar points out that people can invest in vintage looking décor pieces or products that are inspired by a particular culture. The essential things to be kept in mind while designing or re-designing one's home according to Jain are, make sure you design for your own sense of style and sensibility, as you will have to live with the space for a while! Get a designer that you like and whose work you relate to. Think of all the activities that you will do in any room and work towards that. Don't compromise beyond a point on furniture and fixtures; you don't want a wardrobe where the drawer hinges keep coming off every six months.
Jhawar says, “Your home is your personal breathing space; make sure it is clutter free. Do not have ample furniture. An open clutter free home emits a positive vibe. Keep a signature décor piece that showcases your personality. Use sober colours that signify positivity. Lighting plays an important role. Bright lighting attracts positivity into a house.”
Nivedita discusses about the necessary things to keep in mind for the bedroom. She says, “The bedroom should be a place of tranquility and luxury, so keep the decor simple and restrained. Choose soft colors and suitable patterns. Complement the bedding with a chaise or armchairs and coordinated draperies in beautiful fabrics. Buy luxury bedding to quickly transform the look of your bedroom.” With all these exciting new trends available in the market, it's now time to check out what suits your personality and start re-decorating your home. As the festive month is on, you do have a valid excuse to design your home!

PERFECT EQUILIBRIUM Interior designer Amit Porwal has given importance to right colours and straight lines

PERFECT EQUILIBRIUM

Interior designer Amit Porwal has given importance to right colours and straight lines

When interior designer Amit Porwal, CEO and Principal Designer, ICON Projects was approached to do an apartment in Mulund, the brief
    was simple. Porwal says, "I
    knew the family personally and
    they wanted to upgrade their
lifestyle. Earlier, they used to stay in Kalyan and then they came to Mulund."
Going with the contemporary and modern theme with a classic touch, the entrance door is in veneer and stainless steel jaali design, which gives a glimpse of the interiors.
After entering, the right side has a dining arrangement. The right side wall has travertine stone detailing with spot lights. Below, there are two layers of back lit onyx stones. There is a tall black vase and a floating cabinet in white and black placed between the two. The head of the cabinet again has back lit onyx. The dining area consists of a long table with four high chairs and a 'bench' style seating.
On the left, the space is utilised
for the seating arrangement. There is an L-shaped sofa in light brown and a small sofa-chair in black on the opposite side. The centre table has back painted glass and stainless steel laser cut pedestals. The television is mounted on a paneled wall in white lamination. The space below is reserved for television paraphernalia. The ceiling has different shapes of rafters in veneer. Porwal says, "I personally think veneer gives a natural look and character to a space." The living room lighting focuses on mood lighting with beam lights and spot lights. The pendant light on the ceiling is in silk thread and crystals.
With an AC in the living room, the passage area has a glass door. Porwal says, “However, the door cannot be seen when open as it goes inside the wall."There is a temple in the passage. It also houses the storage cabinets.
The kitchen is open and parallel styled with a grey pearl granite counter. The bathrooms are also designed beautifully with different shapes of basins and nec
essary storage.
The son's room is in white. On the right, there is a television cabinet in white lamination and two lines of veneer. The immediate wall surrounding the television is textured in grey and silver. On the
left, there is an array of wardrobes which are in white with a line in black. The wall behind the bed has textured wallpaper with light effects. Curtains in shades of grey have been used to match the theme.
The daughter's room was small in size. Amit says, "We created a small ledge in solid wood for keeping the mattress.” The ledge made the room look a little bigger. Behind, there is a wallpaper in pink and white floral patterns with white lights. Opposite the bed, there is a wardrobe that is made of back painted glass giving a shaded pink effect.
The master bedroom looks elegant with solid wooden flooring. There is a space made for the television cabinet and a ledge useful for keeping laptop or books. The television background has wallpaper and the cabinet is in veneer having two niches with spot lights. The master bedroom panel touches the ceiling. The bed in the centre is in wood upholstered in white leather that matches the headboard in leather. The wooden
niche with a mirror behind gives depth to the room. The small space between the bed and niche is covered with wallpaper and indirect lighting. There is a side table on one side and dressing table on the other. The dressing table has a full-length mirror in an L-shape that covers the small corner beside the wardrobe and reaches the wall. Porwal says, “The mirror enhances the height of the room.” The entire line of wardrobes is in brown with white lines and spot lights.
Porwal says, "Importance was given to maximum space utilisation and functionality. Playing with soft colours and straight lines did wonders. Although, colours bring warmth there should be a right balance."
Also, the lighting arrangement in the entire house added to the look. Porwal says, “There should be two to three variables of lighting in every room like direct, indirect and spot lights among others.”
Porwal concludes, “Styling has been given importance in the dé
cor. Maximum understanding and sense of thought has gone while
harmonising the design.”
